High Voltage + ASP3 Capabilities

CES P/L provides comprehensive electrical engineering services and we are highly experienced with high voltage systems. Our work is primarily governed by Australian Standard ASNZS2067 and ASNZS3007 for mining applications.

The term high voltage (HV) is used for systems above 1,000 volts AC or 1,500 volts DC.

Higher voltage is often used to reduce the amount of energy loss in overhead power lines and underground cables by transmitting at a higher voltage, as HV power can be transmitted over a longer distance with very small losses.

Well designed HV systems play a significant role in reducing the overall costs of power systems projects.

HV is regularly associated with distributing power to areas of a site that require the load, as most equipment is low voltage that draws a high current. For this reason, HV is distributed to that area and transformed into low voltage to drive that infrastructure.

Designing HV Systems

HV electrical equipment whether indoor or outdoor generally experiences a high degree of stress due to the voltage. In undertaking the design of HV systems, CES will assess and specify appropriately rated equipment that is capable of the duty and location within the network.

We design power systems with safety, contingency and expansion in mind.

High Voltage Project Notes

We are commonly contacted to help with both site expansions and new sites, with a common request to assess the potential of either HV or LV supplies.

When assessing the best outcome for an electrical project, two main objectives are considered.

  1. Most cost effective approach for the installation
  2. Minimise distribution losses.

Where large loads are required, high voltage networks will be the most effective method of distribution, transforming the power to low voltage as close as possible to the load. Each application is assessed on an individual basis by engaging CES for assistance.

We have Level 3 Accredited Service Provider (ASP3) capabilities for the NSW electricity network and are capable of electrical projects occurring between the grid and site as well as the entire site.

Key High Voltage Projects

Woodlawn Mine, NSW

Our role was to extend the current design of the HV system to connect to the underground power distribution.

Underground substations connected to this network would then transform the voltage to 1,000v to run their mining equipment.

Mine Tunnels & Industrial Plants in NSW/NZ

Manapouri Hydro Power Station at Manapouri Lake, New Zealand, South Island, NZ

Whether it be a new high voltage system, or an extension of the current network, CES has the experience and resources to design and manage your project. Including ASP and private network services.
